CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is a fragrance-free barrier moisturizer with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, petrolatum and dimethicone. The short answer: it's a solid choice for dry or mature skin and a good partner for retinoids, but it isn't an anti-wrinkle treatment on its own. For wrinkles, pair it with daily sunscreen and a retinoid.

## What's in it

According to CeraVe's product page ([CeraVe](https://www.cerave.com/skincare/moisturizers/moisturizing-cream)):

| Ingredient | Role |
|---|---|
| Ceramide NP, AP and EOP | Barrier lipids |
| Cholesterol, phytosphingosine | Support the barrier lipid mix |
| Glycerin, sodium hyaluronate | Humectants that attract water |
| Petrolatum | Occlusive that reduces water loss |
| Dimethicone | Smooths and softens |
| MVE delivery technology | Brand's slow-release system |

The brand describes it as fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, allergy-tested and accepted by the National Eczema Association, for normal to dry skin on the face and body, ages 3 and up.

## What the research shows

- **Over-the-counter moisturizer comparison:** In a small randomized forearm study of people with atopic dermatitis, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream was one of four moisturizers tested for 4 weeks. Skin hydration (capacitance) improved significantly on the moisturized forearm. Changes in water loss and pH weren't significant, and the authors said the study was underpowered ([Leshem et al., *Dermatitis*, 2020](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32947459/)).
- **Moisturizers with retinoids:** In a split-face trial, adding a moisturizer to daily tretinoin made irritation milder ([Schorr et al., *J Drugs Dermatol*, 2012](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23135655/)). A ceramide and niacinamide moisturizer used with adapalene and benzoyl peroxide also reduced irritation in an acne trial ([Tempark et al., *J Cosmet Dermatol*, 2024](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38299457/)). Neither study tested this exact product, but both support the idea of a barrier moisturizer alongside retinoids.
- **Ingredients:** The AAD lists hyaluronic acid, glycerin, dimethicone and petrolatum among helpful ingredients for dry skin ([AAD: dry skin tips](https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/skin-care-basics/dry/dermatologists-tips-relieve-dry-skin)).

## What it won't do

It doesn't contain retinoids, sunscreen, vitamin C or peptides. Moisturizers can make fine lines look softer by hydrating skin, but lasting wrinkle improvement comes from ingredients like retinol ([Kafi et al., *Arch Dermatol*, 2007](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17515510/)) and daily sunscreen ([Hughes et al., *Ann Intern Med*, 2013](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23732711/)).

## Who it suits

| Good fit | Maybe not |
|---|---|
| Dry, mature or sensitive skin | Very oily or acne-prone skin that prefers lighter textures |
| Retinoid users with dryness | People who want a daytime product with SPF |
| Eczema-prone skin | Anyone allergic to an ingredient on the list |

## How to use it in an anti-aging routine

**Morning:** gentle cleanser, vitamin C or niacinamide if you use them, a thin layer of the cream, then broad-spectrum SPF 30+ ([AAD: sunscreen FAQs](https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/sun-protection/shade-clothing-sunscreen/sunscreen-faqs)).

**Evening:** cleanser, retinoid, then the cream. On sensitive skin, try the cream first, retinoid, then more cream.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is it too heavy for the face?** It's rich, but many people use it on the face. If it feels heavy, the brand also makes a lighter lotion.

**Can it clog pores?** The brand labels it non-comedogenic; patch test if you're breakout-prone.

**Is it worth it for aging skin?** As a basic moisturizer, yes. Just don't expect it to replace sunscreen or a retinoid.
