Elastin is the protein that lets skin stretch and recoil. It makes up only a small share of the dermis, but when its fiber network breaks down, skin stops snapping back and starts to sag and crease. The short answer: adults make very little new functional elastin, and sun exposure turns the existing network into tangled, useless clumps called solar elastosis. You cannot fully rebuild elastin with a cream, but daily sunscreen protects what you have, and retinoids and some procedures improve the look of laxity.

## The short answer

- Elastic fibers are laid down mainly before adulthood and turn over very slowly, so damage accumulates ([Baumann et al., *Aesthet Surg J Open Forum*, 2021](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34195612/)).
- In photoaged skin, UV causes abnormal elastic material to pile up in the dermis (solar elastosis), a hallmark of sun damage ([Weihermann et al., *Int J Cosmet Sci*, 2017](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27731897/)).
- Collagen and elastin both sit in the extracellular matrix; see our guide to [the extracellular matrix and skin aging](/blog/extracellular-matrix-skin-aging).

## How elastin ages

**Intrinsic aging** slowly thins and fragments the fine elastic fibers that reach up toward the epidermis. **Photoaging** is far more destructive: UV light activates enzymes (including elastases and matrix metalloproteinases) and drives fibroblasts to produce disorganized elastic material that cannot recoil. Under the microscope, sun-damaged skin shows thick clumps of this material instead of a neat fiber network. This is why the sun-exposed neck and face sag sooner than the inner arm. See [photoaging vs chronological aging](/blog/photoaging-vs-chronological-aging).

## What helps, and how strong the evidence is

| Approach | What it does | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ | Prevents further UV damage | Strong for photoaging prevention |
| Topical retinoids | Improve fine wrinkles and dermal matrix | Strong for tretinoin; good for retinol |
| Energy devices (RF, ultrasound, lasers) | Heat-driven dermal remodeling | Moderate; results vary |
| "Elastin" in creams | Moisturizes the surface | Large proteins do not rebuild dermal elastin |
| Surgery | Removes excess skin | Most effective for marked laxity |

Tretinoin improved photoaged skin in a controlled trial ([Weiss et al., *JAMA*, 1988](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3336176/)), and retinol improved naturally aged skin and increased dermal matrix markers ([Kafi et al., *Arch Dermatol*, 2007](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17515510/)). The Baumann review notes that true elastic fiber regeneration in adult skin remains an unsolved problem.

## Practical steps

1. Wear [sunscreen](/blog/sunscreen-anti-aging-guide) daily, including the neck and chest.
2. Add a nightly retinoid; start slowly ([retinol vs retinoid](/blog/retinol-vs-retinoid)).
3. Don't smoke; smoking is linked to elastic fiber damage.
4. For visible laxity, see a board-certified dermatologist about devices or surgical options.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can collagen or elastin supplements restore elastin?

There is no good evidence that oral supplements rebuild functional elastic fibers in adult skin.

### Is sagging only an elastin problem?

No. Fat pad shifts, bone loss and collagen loss all contribute.

### Does weight loss affect elastin?

Rapid weight loss can reveal laxity because damaged elastic fibers cannot recoil to fit a smaller volume.

## Bottom line

Elastin is hard to replace, so protecting it with sunscreen is the most important step. Retinoids and professional treatments can improve how lax skin looks, but no cream restores the original elastic network.
