Some people taking GLP-1 medicines report skin that feels unusually sensitive, tingly, burning or painful to light touch. The short answer: in a large trial of high-dose semaglutide (7.2 mg), unusual skin sensations called dysaesthesia were reported by about 23% of people, compared with 6% on the standard 2.4 mg dose and under 1% on placebo. If you notice it, tell your prescriber.

## What dysaesthesia means

Dysaesthesia is an unpleasant, abnormal sensation, such as tingling, burning, prickling or pain from touch that wouldn't normally hurt. People often describe it as skin that "hurts to touch" or feels sunburned without a burn.

## What the trials found

| Trial | Group | Dysaesthesia |
|---|---|---|
| STEP UP, adults with obesity ([Wharton et al., *Lancet Diabetes Endocrinol*, 2025](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40961952/)) | Semaglutide 7.2 mg | 22.9% (230 of 1,004) |
| | Semaglutide 2.4 mg | 6.0% (12 of 201) |
| | Placebo | 0.5% (1 of 201) |
| STEP UP T2D, adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes ([Lingvay et al., *Lancet Diabetes Endocrinol*, 2025](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40961953/)) | 7.2 mg vs 2.4 mg | Safety was comparable except for an imbalance in dysaesthesia |

These trials lasted 72 weeks. Average weight loss in STEP UP was 18.7% with 7.2 mg and 15.6% with 2.4 mg ([Wharton et al., *Lancet Diabetes Endocrinol*, 2025](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40961952/)).

## Why it happens

The cause isn't established. The trial abstracts report how often it occurred but don't explain the mechanism. Rapid weight loss, nerve effects and dose may all be factors; we don't make claims beyond what's been studied.

## What to do if your skin feels sensitive

1. **Tell your prescriber.** It may relate to your dose; don't change your dose on your own.
2. **Ask about other causes.** Skin pain or tingling has many possible causes, so let your doctor examine you, and think about any new skincare product you've started.
3. **Be gentle with your skin:** lukewarm water, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturizer ([AAD: face washing 101](https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/skin-care-basics/care/face-washing-101); [AAD: dry skin tips](https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/skin-care-basics/dry/dermatologists-tips-relieve-dry-skin)).
4. **Pause harsh actives** like strong acids or retinoids until it settles.
5. **Wear soft, loose clothing** if fabric bothers your skin.

## When to get urgent care

Seek care for blistering, a rash with fever, facial or throat swelling, or trouble breathing.

## Skincare during weight loss

- **Sunscreen daily** remains the strongest anti-aging step ([Hughes et al., *Ann Intern Med*, 2013](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23732711/)).
- **Retinoids** can help skin quality once your skin isn't sensitive ([Kafi et al., *Arch Dermatol*, 2007](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17515510/)).
- **Protein and strength training:** expert groups recommend adequate protein for older adults ([Bauer et al., *J Am Med Dir Assoc*, 2013](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23867520/)).

## Frequently asked questions

**Does GLP-1 skin sensitivity go away?** The trial abstracts don't report how long it lasted. Ask your prescriber.

**Does it happen on Ozempic or Zepbound?** The data above comes from semaglutide 7.2 mg and 2.4 mg. Rates for other drugs and doses may differ.

**Is it dangerous?** Usually reported as a side effect rather than a serious event, but get any new or severe symptom checked.
