Air pollution is now recognized as one of the environmental factors linked to skin aging, alongside sun and smoking. The short answer: studies associate long-term fine particle (PM2.5) exposure with more pigment spots and ozone exposure with more coarse wrinkles, but the evidence is still limited. Practical protection means sunscreen, thorough cleansing and a healthy barrier; "anti-pollution" product claims are mostly unproven.

## What the research shows

- **Fine particles (PM2.5):** a 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found a consistent association between long-term PM2.5 exposure and pigmentary skin aging, with limited and uncertain evidence for wrinkles; the authors described the evidence as small and low-certainty ([Tjiu et al., *Life (Basel)*, 2025](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41598216/)).
- **Ozone:** in two German cohorts, higher ozone exposure was associated with coarse facial wrinkles but not pigment spots, independent of UV exposure and other pollutants ([Fuks et al., *Environ Int*, 2019](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30641257/)).
- **The exposome:** researchers include pollution among the environmental exposures that influence skin aging ([Krutmann et al., *J Dermatol Sci*, 2017](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27720464/)).

## How pollution might affect skin

Pollutants are thought to cause oxidative stress and inflammation, which can damage collagen and stimulate pigment. Pollution and UV may also add to each other's effects.

## What helps

| Step | Why |
|---|---|
| Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen | UV is still the biggest controllable factor; daily use slowed visible aging in a randomized trial ([Hughes et al., *Ann Intern Med*, 2013](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23732711/)) |
| Gentle, thorough cleansing at night | Removes particles, sunscreen and makeup |
| Moisturizer | Supports the barrier |
| Antioxidant serum (optional) | Vitamin C and others may help oxidative stress; evidence for pollution-specific benefits is limited |
| Retinoid at night | Treats existing photoaging ([Weiss et al., *JAMA*, 1988](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3336176/)) |
| Not smoking | Tobacco smoke is a major indoor pollutant |

## Indoor air

Cooking smoke, smoking and poor ventilation also matter. Ventilate when cooking and avoid indoor smoking.

## "Anti-pollution" products

Labels claiming to "shield" skin from pollution are marketing terms without standard testing. Focus on proven basics.

## Who may be more affected

City dwellers, commuters near heavy traffic and outdoor workers have higher exposure. People prone to dark spots may want to be especially consistent with sunscreen ([AAD: sunscreen FAQs](https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/sun-protection/shade-clothing-sunscreen/sunscreen-faqs)).

## Frequently asked questions

**Does pollution cause wrinkles?** Ozone has been linked to coarse wrinkles in cohort studies; evidence for particles is weaker.

**Do air purifiers help skin?** They improve indoor air; direct skin benefits haven't been well studied.

**Is double cleansing necessary?** Only if you wear heavy sunscreen or makeup.
