Retinol is the best-studied over-the-counter ingredient for fine lines and uneven texture, but how you start matters more than which bottle you buy. The short answer: choose a low to moderate strength (about 0.25–0.5%) if you're new, apply a pea-sized amount to dry skin at night 2–3 times a week, increase slowly, moisturize and wear sunscreen daily. Expect visible change after about 3 months. Skip retinoids if you're pregnant or trying to conceive unless your doctor approves.

## Why it works

Retinol is converted in skin to retinoic acid, the active form in prescription tretinoin, which changes gene expression to speed cell turnover and support collagen ([Mukherjee et al., *Clin Interv Aging*, 2006](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18046911/)). In a controlled trial, retinol improved fine wrinkles in naturally aged skin and increased collagen markers ([Kafi et al., *Arch Dermatol*, 2007](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17515510/)). Tretinoin has the longest track record ([Weiss et al., *JAMA*, 1988](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3336176/)). More in [how retinol stimulates collagen](/blog/how-does-retinol-stimulate-collagen) and [retinol vs retinoid](/blog/retinol-vs-retinoid).

## Choosing a strength

| Your situation | Suggested starting point |
|---|---|
| First retinoid, sensitive or dry skin | Low (~0.1–0.3%) or a gentler retinoid ester |
| First retinoid, normal or oily skin | Low to moderate (~0.25–0.5%) |
| Tolerating 0.5% for 2–3 months | Consider ~1% or retinal |
| Want stronger results | Ask about prescription tretinoin ([OTC vs prescription](/blog/prescription-vs-otc-retinoids)) |

Percentages aren't directly comparable across retinol, retinal and esters, and formulas differ. Higher strength means more irritation, not necessarily better long-term results.

## When to start

Many people start in their mid-20s to 30s when fine lines or texture appear, but there's no required age. Sun protection matters at every age.

## How to apply: step by step

1. Cleanse and pat skin fully dry.
2. Apply a pea-sized amount for the whole face, avoiding the eye creases, nostrils and lip corners.
3. Follow with moisturizer (or apply moisturizer first to buffer).
4. Next morning: broad-spectrum SPF 30+ ([sunscreen guide](/blog/sunscreen-anti-aging-guide)).

## Week-by-week plan

| Weeks | Frequency |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | 2 nights a week |
| 3–4 | Every other night if no irritation |
| 5+ | Nightly if tolerated |

Back off if you're peeling or stinging.

## What to expect

Dryness, flaking, redness or stinging ("retinoid dermatitis") are common early and usually settle within weeks ([Mukherjee et al., *Clin Interv Aging*, 2006](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18046911/)). A temporary acne flare can occur ([purging](/blog/can-retinol-cause-purging)). Fine lines and texture typically improve over about 3 to 6 months.

## Common questions on use

- **Night or morning?** Night; retinol degrades in light.
- **Wet skin?** Dry skin is usually advised; damp skin can increase irritation.
- **Summer?** Yes, with daily sunscreen and shade.
- **With other actives?** Vitamin C in the morning ([vitamin C and retinol](/blog/can-you-use-vitamin-c-and-retinol-together)); acids on alternate nights ([retinoids and AHAs](/blog/routine-with-tretinoin-and-aha)); hyaluronic acid any time ([HA and retinol](/blog/can-you-mix-hyaluronic-acid-and-retinol)).
- **Sandwich method?** Moisturizer, retinol, moisturizer for sensitive skin ([retinoid sandwich](/blog/routine-retinoid-sandwich)).

## Who should avoid or pause retinol

- Pregnant or trying to conceive (talk to your doctor).
- Active eczema or a damaged barrier.
- A few days before waxing or certain procedures, per your provider.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use retinol around my eyes?

Use a small amount on the orbital bone or an eye-specific product, and stop if irritated.

### How long until I see results?

Smoother texture in weeks; fine lines in about 3–6 months.

### Should I stop if my skin peels?

Reduce frequency and moisturize more; stop if you have burning or raw skin ([if retinol burns](/blog/what-to-do-if-retinol-burns-skin)).

## Bottom line

Start low and slow, use it at night on dry skin, moisturize and wear sunscreen. Consistency over months matters more than strength.
