Textured skin usually means roughness, bumps, enlarged-looking pores or shallow scars. The short answer: for mild texture, daily sunscreen, an exfoliating acid and a retinoid work well over a few months. For acne scars or deeper texture, in-office treatments such as microneedling or lasers work better.

## Common causes

| Cause | Looks like |
|---|---|
| Dead skin buildup | Dull, rough surface |
| Sun damage | Roughness, uneven tone, fine lines |
| Clogged pores and acne | Small bumps, blackheads |
| Acne scars | Pits and rolling dips |
| Keratosis pilaris | Tiny rough bumps, often on arms |
| Dryness or a damaged barrier | Flaky, tight skin |

## At-home treatments with evidence

- **Glycolic acid:** In a 3-month randomized trial, daily 5% glycolic acid improved skin texture and discoloration compared with placebo ([Thibault et al., *Dermatol Surg*, 1998](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9598014/)).
- **Retinoids:** Retinol improved fine wrinkles in aged skin ([Kafi et al., *Arch Dermatol*, 2007](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17515510/)). A 0.1% retinaldehyde cream refined texture better than three glycolic acid peels over 8 weeks, with fewer side effects ([Rouvrais et al., *J Cosmet Dermatol*, 2018](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30027612/)).
- **Niacinamide:** 5% improved texture, fine lines and spots over 12 weeks ([Bissett et al., *Int J Cosmet Sci*, 2004](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18492135/)).
- **Sunscreen:** Daily use slowed visible skin aging, including texture changes, in a 4.5-year trial ([Hughes et al., *Ann Intern Med*, 2013](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23732711/)).

## Don't scrub it away

The AAD advises gentle, non-abrasive cleansers, using your fingertips, and not scrubbing, since scrubbing irritates skin ([AAD: face washing 101](https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/skin-care-basics/care/face-washing-101)). Harsh cleansers can also damage the skin barrier and make skin feel rougher ([Ananthapadmanabhan et al., *Dermatol Ther*, 2004](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14728695/)).

## In-office options

| Treatment | Best for | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Microneedling | Acne scars, general texture | A review of 9 randomized trials found it effective and well tolerated for atrophic acne scars ([Sitohang et al., *Int Wound J*, 2021](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33538106/)) |
| Chemical peels | Sun damage, dullness | Glycolic acid peels used in many protocols ([Burns et al., *Dermatol Surg*, 1997](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9145958/)) |
| Fractional lasers | Sun damage, scars | Fractional technology leaves islands of untreated skin that speed healing ([Borges et al., *Clin Cosmet Investig Dermatol*, 2016](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27217790/)) |
| Radiofrequency | Laxity, scars | Improved acne scars and wrinkles in a systematic review ([Austin et al., *Lasers Surg Med*, 2022](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34923652/)) |

## A simple routine for texture

**Morning:** gentle cleanser, niacinamide, moisturizer, SPF 30+.

**Evening:** gentle cleanser, then alternate a retinoid and a glycolic acid product on different nights, then moisturizer.

Give it 8 to 12 weeks, since most trials ran that long or longer.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why is my skin textured but not breaking out?** Sun damage, dryness and dead skin buildup are common causes.

**Can I use acids and retinol together?** Yes, usually on alternate nights to limit irritation.

**When should I see a dermatologist?** If you have scars, persistent bumps, or texture that doesn't improve after a few months.
