You can use tretinoin and an AHA (glycolic or lactic acid) in the same routine, but usually not on the same night when you're starting out. The short answer: both can irritate on their own, and stacking them raises the chance of redness, peeling and stinging. Alternating nights is the safest way to get the benefits of each.

## What each one does

| | Tretinoin | AHAs (glycolic, lactic) |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Prescription retinoid that changes cell behavior and supports collagen | Loosen bonds between dead surface cells |
| Evidence | Improved photoaged skin in a controlled trial ([Weiss et al., *JAMA*, 1988](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3336176/)) | Daily 5% glycolic acid improved texture and discoloration over 3 months, but not wrinkles significantly ([Thibault et al., *Dermatol Surg*, 1998](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9598014/)) |
| Main side effects | Dryness, peeling, redness | Stinging, sun sensitivity |
| Speed | Months | Weeks |

## Have they been used together?

Yes, under supervision. In a small randomized study of patients with darker skin (Fitzpatrick IV to VI) and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, all participants used 0.05% tretinoin at night plus a gel with 10% glycolic acid and 2% hydroquinone, and some also had glycolic acid peels. Side effects were minimal ([Burns et al., *Dermatol Surg*, 1997](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9145958/)). That was a doctor-managed regimen, not a do-it-yourself stack.

## A sample alternating schedule

| Night | Product |
|---|---|
| Mon | Tretinoin, then moisturizer |
| Tue | Moisturizer only |
| Wed | Tretinoin, then moisturizer |
| Thu | AHA, then moisturizer |
| Fri | Tretinoin, then moisturizer |
| Sat, Sun | Moisturizer only |

Once your skin has adjusted to tretinoin for a couple of months, you can try adding a second AHA night.

## Make it easier on your skin

- **Moisturize:** in a split-face trial, adding a moisturizer to daily tretinoin 0.05% made irritation milder on that side, and participants preferred it ([Schorr et al., *J Drugs Dermatol*, 2012](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23135655/)).
- **Wait until skin is dry** before applying tretinoin.
- **Use a pea-sized amount** of tretinoin for the whole face.
- **Wear sunscreen every morning**, since both ingredients can increase sun sensitivity ([AAD: sunscreen FAQs](https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/sun-protection/shade-clothing-sunscreen/sunscreen-faqs)).

## Signs to stop or scale back

- Burning or stinging that lasts after application
- Raw, shiny or cracked skin
- Patches of redness that don't settle
- New darkening, especially on darker skin

Stop the AHA first, keep moisturizing, and restart tretinoin less often once your skin has calmed.

## Who should avoid the combination

Anyone with eczema, active rosacea or a damaged barrier; anyone pregnant or trying to conceive (avoid retinoids unless a doctor approves); and anyone who has recently had a peel, laser treatment or waxing.

## Signs you're overdoing it

- Stinging when you apply plain moisturizer
- Shiny, tight or "plastic-looking" skin
- Patches of raw, flaky skin around the nose and mouth
- New redness that lasts more than a day

If you notice any of these, stop the AHA, cut tretinoin back to every third night, and use only a bland moisturizer until your skin settles. Then reintroduce one product at a time.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I use a glycolic toner in the morning and tretinoin at night?** Some people tolerate this, but it's still daily acid plus a retinoid. Try it only after weeks of comfortable tretinoin use.

**Is lactic acid gentler?** It's often described as milder, but tolerance varies.

**Will an AHA make tretinoin work faster?** There's no good evidence it does.
