EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 and Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 are two of the most popular facial sunscreens, and they're built very differently. The short answer: EltaMD UV Clear combines 9% zinc oxide and 7.5% octinoxate with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, and is marketed for acne-prone, rosacea-prone and discoloration-prone skin. Supergoop Unseen uses four chemical filters (avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene) in a clear, silicone-based gel that doubles as a makeup primer and leaves no white cast. Both are broad spectrum. The best sunscreen is the one you'll wear every day, in the right amount.

The short answer

Feature EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 Supergoop Unseen SPF 40
UV filters Zinc oxide 9%, octinoxate 7.5% Avobenzone 3%, homosalate 8%, octisalate 5%, octocrylene 4%
Extras Niacinamide, HA, vitamin E Meadowfoam, red algae
Finish Light lotion Clear primer-like gel

Actives are from each product's FDA drug label on DailyMed (EltaMD UV Clear; Supergoop Unseen). Check your package, since formulas change.

Why sunscreen is the top anti-aging product

In a randomized trial, adults who applied sunscreen daily showed no detectable increase in skin aging over 4.5 years and 24% less aging than those who used it at their discretion (Hughes et al., Ann Intern Med, 2013). The AAD recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and water resistance for outdoor activity (AAD: sunscreen FAQs). Both products meet the SPF 30+ threshold.

EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46

Zinc oxide is a mineral filter covering UVB and a broad range of UVA. Octinoxate is a chemical UVB filter. The formula includes niacinamide, which has evidence for barrier support and tone (Tanno et al., Br J Dermatol, 2000), plus sodium hyaluronate and lactic acid. EltaMD makes tinted and untinted versions.

Best for: acne-prone, oily, combination or rosacea-prone skin; people who want a lightweight daily lotion. Consider: it's not labeled water resistant, so pick a water-resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating.

Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40

Avobenzone is the main UVA filter; homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene cover UVB and help stabilize avobenzone. The base is mostly silicones (isododecane and dimethicone crosspolymers), which gives the invisible, velvety finish.

Best for: all skin tones that dislike white cast, makeup wearers, people who skip sunscreen because of texture. Consider: people sensitive to chemical filters, or who prefer mineral sunscreens, may do better with zinc-based options. Silicone-heavy primers can pill under some products.

Mineral vs chemical: does it matter?

Both types protect skin when applied correctly. The FDA has proposed that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are generally recognized as safe and effective, and has asked for more safety data on most chemical filters, including avobenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene (FDA: sunscreen questions and answers). That request for data isn't a finding of harm. If you have sensitive or reactive skin, mineral filters are often better tolerated.

How to apply for real protection

  1. Use about a nickel-sized amount for the face (roughly 1/4 teaspoon), plus neck and ears.
  2. Apply 15 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every 2 hours outdoors and after sweating or swimming.
  3. Layer over moisturizer and under makeup.
  4. Read our sunscreen mistakes that age you faster and sunscreen under makeup tips. For more on prevention, see photoaging vs chronological aging.

Frequently asked questions

Is EltaMD or Supergoop better for acne-prone skin?

EltaMD UV Clear is specifically marketed for acne-prone skin and contains niacinamide. Some acne-prone people also do well with Unseen; it depends on your skin.

Does Supergoop Unseen leave a white cast?

No. Its chemical filters are clear, which is why it's popular with deeper skin tones.

Is EltaMD UV Clear a mineral sunscreen?

Not entirely. It combines zinc oxide (mineral) with octinoxate (chemical). EltaMD sells separate all-mineral options.

Can I rely on SPF in makeup instead?

Usually not. Most people apply far too little makeup to reach the labeled SPF. Use a dedicated sunscreen underneath.

Bottom line

EltaMD UV Clear suits acne-prone and sensitive skin that wants zinc and niacinamide; Supergoop Unseen suits anyone who wants an invisible, primer-like finish. Both are broad-spectrum SPF 30+. Wear one every day, apply enough, and talk to your dermatologist about sunscreen if you have melasma, rosacea or a history of skin cancer.
