Neutrogena vs CeraVe Retinol: Rapid Wrinkle Repair Night vs Resurfacing Retinol Serum, Compared by Ingredients
Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Night Moisturizer and CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum are two of the most popular drugstore retinols. How their ingredients and uses differ.
Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Night Moisturizer and CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum are two of the most widely sold drugstore retinol products, but they're built for different jobs. The short answer: Neutrogena's is a night moisturizer with retinol and hyaluronic acid, positioned for fine lines and wrinkles, and it contains fragrance. CeraVe's is a lightweight, fragrance-free serum with encapsulated retinol, niacinamide, licorice root extract and three ceramides, positioned for post-acne marks, pores and texture. Neither brand publishes its retinol percentage.

Ingredient lists come from each brand's own product page (Neutrogena; CeraVe). Formulas change, so check your package.
What's in Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Night
The formula is a cream base (water, pentaerythrityl tetraethylhexanoate, dimethicone, glycerin) with retinol, sodium hyaluronate and a small amount of ascorbic acid, plus BHT as an antioxidant stabilizer. Neutrogena describes its "Retinol SA" as a stabilized retinol delivered gradually, and says it combines this with a glucose complex and hyaluronic acid. It contains fragrance.
Best for: normal to dry skin focused on fine lines, people who want one product that both treats and moisturizes, and those who don't mind fragrance.
What's in CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum
This is a light serum base (water, propanediol, dimethicone) with niacinamide high on the list, encapsulated retinol, dipotassium glycyrrhizate and licorice root extract for brightening, and ceramides NP, AP and EOP with cholesterol and phytosphingosine. CeraVe recommends it at night only and lists it as non-comedogenic and free of added fragrance. Niacinamide has its own evidence for fine lines and tone (Bissett et al., Dermatol Surg, 2005).
Best for: acne-prone or oily skin, post-acne marks, sensitivity to fragrance, and people who want to layer their own moisturizer on top.
What the evidence says about retinol
Over-the-counter retinol improved fine wrinkles and increased dermal collagen markers in naturally aged skin in a controlled trial (Kafi et al., Arch Dermatol, 2007). Retinol is converted in the skin into retinoic acid, the active form in prescription tretinoin, so it's gentler but slower (Mukherjee et al., Clin Interv Aging, 2006). The AAD notes retinoids can reduce fine lines and that results take time (AAD: wrinkle remedies). Neither brand's product-specific clinical claims have been independently published in a peer-reviewed trial that we could find.
How to use either one
- If you're new to retinoids, start 2–3 nights a week and build up.
- Apply a pea-sized amount to dry skin at night, then moisturize.
- Don't layer with other retinoids, and avoid acids on the same night at first.
- Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning.
- Avoid retinoids if you're pregnant or trying to conceive unless your doctor approves.

Frequently asked questions
Which is stronger?
Neither brand discloses its retinol percentage, so a direct strength comparison isn't possible.
Can I use CeraVe's serum under Neutrogena's cream?
Not both at once. They both contain retinol, so doubling up raises irritation.
Is either safe for sensitive skin?
CeraVe's is fragrance-free and includes ceramides and niacinamide, which may suit sensitive skin better. Patch test either one.
Bottom line
Choose by format and goal, not brand: Neutrogena's is an all-in-one night moisturizer focused on wrinkles, and CeraVe's is a fragrance-free serum aimed at marks and texture. Start slowly and use sunscreen daily.
