SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic vs Dupes: How Timeless and Maelove Compare by Ingredients
C E Ferulic pairs 15% L-ascorbic acid with 1% vitamin E and 0.5% ferulic acid. How popular alternatives compare on their labels, what the research shows, and how to choose.
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is one of the best-known vitamin C serums, and many brands sell serums with a similar "C + E + ferulic" combination. The short answer: C E Ferulic contains 15% L-ascorbic acid, 1% vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) and 0.5% ferulic acid, a combination studied in published laboratory and human-skin research. Alternatives such as Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum and Maelove Glow Maker list the same three core actives. What a label can't tell you is how each formula's pH, stability and packaging compare, and only C E Ferulic's specific formula has the published research behind it. If a serum turns dark orange or brown, it has oxidized and should be replaced.

What the research shows
- In a study from Duke University researchers, adding 0.5% ferulic acid to a solution of 15% L-ascorbic acid and 1% alpha-tocopherol improved its chemical stability and doubled its protection of skin against solar-simulated UV damage, compared with C + E alone (Lin et al., J Invest Dermatol, 2005).
- Topical vitamin C works as an antioxidant, supports collagen synthesis and can lighten pigment, based on clinical studies reviewed by dermatologists (Al-Niaimi & Chiang, J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2017).
- That review notes L-ascorbic acid penetrates skin best at an acidic pH (around 3.5 or lower) and that concentrations above about 20% don't add benefit.
Important: a dupe with the same three ingredients isn't automatically equivalent. Concentrations of vitamin E and ferulic acid, pH, solvent system and air-tight packaging all affect results, and most dupes haven't published their own testing.
How the serums differ
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic: the formula used in the published ferulic acid research. Dropper bottle; refrigeration isn't required but cool, dark storage helps.
Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic: higher listed L-ascorbic acid. Higher isn't necessarily better, and 20% can be more irritating for sensitive skin.
Maelove Glow Maker: 15% L-ascorbic acid with vitamin E and ferulic acid, plus hyaluronic acid and botanical extracts.
How to choose and use a vitamin C serum
- Choose L-ascorbic acid at 10–20% in dark, air-restricted packaging if you want the best-studied form.
- Apply in the morning after cleansing, then moisturizer and sunscreen. Vitamin C adds to, but doesn't replace, sunscreen.
- Watch the color. Learn the signs in how to tell if vitamin C has oxidized.
- Sensitive skin? Start every other morning, or try a gentler derivative. Our vitamin C serums guide compares forms.
- Pair with a retinoid at night for collagen support: retinol vs vitamin C.
Frequently asked questions
Is C E Ferulic worth it compared with dupes?
Its specific formula is the one with published research behind the C + E + ferulic combination. Dupes list similar ingredients but haven't been tested the same way. Many people do well with either; stability and how your skin tolerates it matter most.
Why does my vitamin C serum smell or turn orange?
L-ascorbic acid oxidizes with air, light and heat, turning yellow to orange to brown. A slight tint is common; dark orange or brown means it has lost potency.
Can vitamin C serums cause breakouts or irritation?
Low-pH L-ascorbic acid can sting or cause redness, especially at higher strengths. Stop if irritation persists.
Can I use C E Ferulic with niacinamide?
Yes. Older concerns about combining them aren't a practical problem for most people. Apply one, let it absorb, then the other.
Bottom line
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is the formula with published research, and Timeless and Maelove offer similar actives on their labels. The best serum is the stable one you'll use every morning under sunscreen. Talk to your dermatologist if you have sensitive skin or melasma.
